We are told that with the entrance of Shabbat, each Jew gains an extra neshama - soul. The way that we live during the week is injected with an extra level of holiness. And on Erev Shabbat - Friday, we begin to feel Shabbat coming in as the extra neshama enters our body, and the closer we get to Shabbat, the more aware we are of its presence. This makes Friday, today, the bridge between ‘chol’ and ‘kodesh’ - that which is mundane and that which is holy. Although it is still a weekday, it is a weekday which is meant for us to solely focus on preparing for Shabbat. Thus, the more we prepare on Friday, the closer we are to approaching the extra level of holiness that we gain on Shabbat and through this we are bringing holiness into that which is otherwise mundane.
Have a happy and holy Erev Shabbat and Shabbat Shalom
