This offer was made again and again. Five boats complied and were safely led to shore. The sixth boat refused.

The sixth boat – the Turkish Mavi Marmara – is the boat where the violence took place.#Armed with knives and metal bars, those on board the Marmara carried out pre-planned violence. A mob of extremists attacked each Israeli soldier. They threw one soldier off the top deck of the ship.

The Turkish boat was sent to provoke – it was funded and organized by a Turkish Islamist organization, the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH), that has links to fundamentalist jihadi groups.

Israel transfers about 15,000 tons of supplies and humanitarian aid every week to the people of Gaza.

Israel said it will deliver any humanitarian aid that was in the boats to Gaza along with its own daily delivery of aid.

Israel left Gaza in hopes of peace in 2005 and, in return, received more than 8,000 rockets and terrorist attacks. Israel has sought peace and compromise with its neighbors for all of its 64 years, and it will continue to do so.

Hamas is responsible for the suffering of both Palestinians and Israelis. Their racist charter calls for Islamic domination; their stance is unchanged, and they repress any Palestinians that try and counter their regime.

Tzfat by EJoffe on Flickr.

Tzfat by EJoffe on Flickr.

Gaza facts

According to the International Middle East Media Center, Hamas has committed systematic attacks of media workers with brutal force; intolerance for dialogue and press freedom.

On May 26, 1948, the Israeli government — then less than two weeks old — enacted an “Ordinance establishing a Defence Army of the State of Israel.” Signed by then-Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, the ordinance said that the Israel Defense Forces would be comprised of “land forces, a navy and an air force.”

The decision was officially put into effect on May 31, 1948. This date is the official founding date of the IDF and is celebrated each year. After the IDF was established, the underground organizations that operated during the British Mandate — the Palmach, Irgun and Lehi — were disbanded and merged into the IDF.

The first IDF chief of staff was Lt. Gen. Yaakov Dori. Since 1948, there have been a total of 20 IDF chiefs of staff. Today, the position is held by Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz.

All IDF soldiers must hold themselves to the standards inscribed in the IDF Code of Conduct, or as it’s called in Hebrew, Ruach Tzahal, The Spirit of the IDF. The tiny pamphlet is kept in every soldier’s pocket at all times.

During basic training, all IDF soldiers read and discuss the Spirit of the IDF with their commanders. It is customary for a framed copy of the Spirit of the IDF to be hung in every IDF office as a constant reminder of the IDF’s values and guidelines.

64 years after its establishment in 1948, the Israel Defense Forces remains ready to defend the country against all threats to the safety of its citizens.

IDF

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem.

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem.

More anti-semitic incidents in Hungary

A couple of weeks ago I passed along two stories about anti-semitism in Hungary. Commenter Stanley Ukridge, who writes from a Budapest IP address, confirmed the first story but said the second one was untrue.

He just sent me news of two more recent anti-semitic incidents.

In one, a statue of Holocaust hero Raoul Wallenberg was desecrated by someone placing pigs feet around the neck:

In the second, anti-semitic graffiti was scrawled on a statue commemorating the shooting of Jews into the Danube by the Arrow Cross militiamen towards the end of World War II (hundreds of Jews were lined up at the river’s edge, told to take off their shoes, and shot so they fell into the river and were swept away.)

The graffiti here says “This is not your country, filthy Jews.”

This one has an arrow pointing to the Danube and says “You will be shot there.”

(There is another famous sculpture commemorating the massacre on the banks of the Danube.)
